Judi and Bill Leonard Cancer Institute for Prevention, Treatment, and Wellness – A Multidisciplinary Cancer Center

At Leonard Cancer Institute, we’re more than a cancer floor or ward. Our multidisciplinary, research-driven approach is built on precision medicine that customizes healthcare, with medical decisions, treatments, and processes tailored to the individual in our care. We use molecular diagnostics, imaging, and analytics to select optimal therapies based on the context of a patient’s genetic makeup and other cellular analysis. This treatment process helps us identify and isolate weakness in tumors, increasing the chances of defeating cancer or at least stopping it from spreading throughout the body.

At the same time, Mission Hospital’s in-house genetics laboratory means tests don’t have to go to an outside laboratory, quickly giving oncologists and radiologists the molecular information they need to begin the most effective lines of treatment.

Our laboratory and leading-edge testing identify cancers in their earliest stages, an often vital step that increases survivability and quality of life during chemotherapy, radiation treatment, and surgery.

Access to the Latest Drug Trials and Treatments

As a leading-edge cancer research center and hospital with connections to other centers, universities, and drug makers, The Leonard Cancer Institute gives patients access to the latest drug trials and other therapies.

Our cancer care includes advanced chemotherapy, highly targeted radiation treatments, and robotic-assisted surgery that can remove tumors, even in their earliest stages, with little or no damage to major organs and nearby tissues. Led by our nationally recognized oncologists, Dr. Stuart Nagasawa and Dr. George Miranda, our cancer center treats those suffering from any form of cancer at any stage. Dr. Nagasawa has successfully treated patients when other doctors have given up hope.

Nurse Navigators Guide the Way

The path through treatment can be complicated and feel overwhelming. Our dedicated Nurse Navigators are here to guide the way. These dedicated, skilled women and men help patients navigate the intricacies of modern healthcare and their treatment plans, including the complexities of dealing with insurance companies.

Nurse navigators also act as a patient’s advocate. These nurses work to ensure care is coordinated between every member of our team and that needs of our patients and their families and caregivers never go unattended.

Caring for Patients, Families, and Caregivers

A cancer diagnosis brings fears no one should face alone. The Leonard Cancer Institute provides support for patients and caregivers alike. This support network includes licensed therapists who are here to help alleviate the anxiety that can come with a cancer diagnosis.

At the same time, we understand how powerful it is to be near those you love during treatment.  We’re here to support family members and caregivers in times of need and we keep you close to home in South Orange County.

Our cancer care also includes guidance from licensed dieticians to ensure patients are receiving the vital nutrients that can play a role in healing during and after chemotherapy, radiation, and surgery.

Complimentary Treatments

Complementing our individualized, evidence-based treatments are secondary treatments and programs including massage therapy, acupuncture, meditation, guided imagery, therapeutic touch, and Tai Chi and Qi Gong.

These complementary therapies are part of our commitment to caring for the entire patient—mind, body, and spirit—and have been shown to decrease stress and anxiety while increasing healthy feelings of wellbeing.
